Melias (Armenian Mleh), protospatharios and domestikos of the exkoubitoi, 10th century. Seal (Lead, 27 mm, 15.25 g). Patriarchal cross on steps, with floral ornaments springing from base. Rev. MЄΛIA, / A'CΠAΘ, S / ΔOM, TON / ЄΞK૪R'/T in five lines; above, decorations. Unpublished in the standard references. Very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The exkoubitoi were one of the elite regiments (tagmata) of the Byzantine army. They were professional soldiers answering directly to the emperor. As domestikos, the Armenian Melias was the commander of the exkoubitoi.
